Meta’s Aggressive Push into AI-Generated Characters Raises Questions
Meta, the corporate parent of Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Threads, is aggressively investing in artificial intelligence-generated characters to drive engagement across its platforms. According to the company, this initiative has been in motion since July 2024.
Mark Zuckerberg recently announced that Meta is dedicating “significantly more” resources to developing AI personas, which are intended to support and enhance the company’s broader AI development efforts. These virtual characters are poised to play a central role in Meta’s ecosystem.
“We expect these AIs to actually, over time, exist on our platforms in the same way that accounts do,” said Connor Hayes, Meta’s vice-president of product for generative AI.
