AI robot artwork shatters auction estimates.
Humanoid robot artist Ai-Da just made history at Sotheby’s Auction House, with its portrait of computer science pioneer Alan Turning selling for $1.3M — marking the first major auction sale of a robot-created artwork.
In 2023 and 2024, Ai-Da Robot participated in the United Nations Global Summit on AI for Good.

The auction house said the sale price for the first artwork by a humanoid robot artist “marks a moment in the history of modern and contemporary art and reflects the growing intersection between A.I. technology and the global art market”.
Ai-Da Robot, which uses an advanced AI language model to speak, said: “The key value of my work is its capacity to serve as a catalyst for dialogue about emerging technologies.”
The work “invites viewers to reflect on the god-like nature of AI and computing while considering the ethical and societal implications of these advancements”, the robot said.
“Alan Turing recognised this potential, and stares at us, as we race towards this future.”

The ‘AI God’ painting sparked intense bidding with 27 offers. It sold for almost ten times the original estimated value of $120,000 – $180,000. The piece combines traditional portrait artistry with AI-driven techniques, using cameras in Ai-Da’s eyes and robotic arms to capture and create the image. The work is part of a larger series examining humanity’s relationship with technology. One day, pieces like Ai-Da’s may be historical artifacts from the early days of the AI and robotics boom.
